| Q: How do I get an interview in the current IT job market? |
| A: don't rely on sunday job ads (unless it's a union job). companies will look internally first before they advertise to the public. I found my job by accident. I was checking rates on wireless internet in my area and noticed that there were plans for expansion. the wireless ISP had no information on their web site for jobs so i called up their customer support and asked who was in charge of hiring. I got the info and ask if they were hiring. She said no but she wanted me to send my resume anyways. I did so and got a call for an interview the following week. I don't have a degree in business hiring practices, but i did stay at a holiday inn... 127.0.0.1 If you haven't done this yet, go to the unemployment office to see if they offer any free classes teaching current job search skills and how to make your resume current. I was 8 years in the industry and was laid off about 2 yers ago. I've been in school ever since and have learned a lot about how job searching has changed in the last few years. What might seem compelling to you on a resume might be thrown out by a hiring manager, so it is good to get some current info on what they are looking for. I used to have large paragraphs of info that I thought was important, but I was told "Think 30 seconds", which is how long most managers will devote to your resume. Then there is layout, bullet points instead of lots of verbage, making it look interesting to the eye, etc. JasonW source: alt.certification.mcse |
